Best apps to learn Mandarin Chinese in 2026: an honest comparison

The best app to learn Mandarin is the one that fits your goal: starting from zero, passing the HSK, reading, or casual daily practice. We compared nine popular apps using Indonesian App Store data and each app's official pages, as of 25 October 2026.

Written by the Study Chinese team. We make one of the apps on this list, so every claim about another app comes from its official page, with a source link.

Ratings and rating counts from the Indonesian App Store, retrieved 25 October 2026. For other apps, the Indonesian column follows the App Store language list. Study Chinese explains its lessons in Indonesian, but its App Store language list currently shows only English and Spanish. "Not stated" means we did not find it on the official page, not that the feature is definitely missing.

How to choose

Four questions before you download

  1. Which HSK exam are you taking? From 13 December 2026 the exam uses HSK 3.0 with nine levels. Choose an app whose word lists follow the 2025 exam syllabus.
  2. Which language are the explanations in? Mandarin grammar is quicker to understand in your own language. Check that the lesson explanations, not just the menus, are in that language.
  3. Do you need speaking practice? Choose an app that scores your tones, because the four tones are the biggest hurdle for beginners.
  4. What is your budget? Almost every app is free to start. Compare what is actually free before you subscribe.

Apps work best when used every day. Many learners combine one course app, a dictionary like Pleco, and classes with a teacher for speaking practice.
